This week in 7th grade ELA, students learned about the difference between direct and indirect characterization. They completed an interactive sorting activity that had them analyze passages from different texts they have read in order to determine whether direct or indirect characterization was being shown. Then they applied their knowledge of the concept to their own collaborative writing task about the first four chapters of The Outsiders, our class novel study

In 7th Grade ELA, students worked through the Article of the Week routine for the third time. Each week, students read, analyze and write about a nonfiction article using what they have learned about POWeR cycles. This week's article, "Laughter is the Best Medicine", discusses the physical, cognitive and social-emotional benefits of laughter. This week, students also began characterizing the greasers from our class novel study, The Outsiders. In small groups, students were tasked with describing assigned characters using evidence from Chapter 1 of the text. Students paid particular attention to physical description (how characters appear externally) and character descriptions (how characters feel/act/behave).
