Accounting I is a course for students who show an interest in the business field. Instruction will focus on debit and credit rules, interpretation of accounting records and financial reports, banking and the preparation of special journals and worksheets.
ACCOUNTING II FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Accounting I
Grades: 10-12
Accounting II begins with a review of the concepts and procedures covered in Accounting I. The course covers advanced accounting principles involving account receivables, payables, payroll notes, inventories, worksheets, adjustments and financial statements.
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
FOR BUSINESS
Prerequisite: Word Processing and Algebra I
Grades: 10-12
This course is designed for students who would like to explore the areas of computer science and programming. The purpose of the course is to provide students with the opportunities to acquire the technical skills needed to create high-quality computer-based solutions to real world problems. Through the use of various programming languages students will learn to solve problems in business mathematics, and other academic disciplines through a logical and analytical approach to problem solving. This course provides students with a foundation in both technology driven careers and in the field of software development, computer animation, video games and Web page design, as well as providing the background necessary for advanced studies in computer science and computer careers.
GENERAL BUSINESS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

This survey course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the business world. The areas explored in the course of study include: Accounting & Bookkeeping, Economics & Business Law, Information Technology, Financial and Marketing & Management. This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the various subject matters and select full year business and technology courses based on their areas of interest. Seniors enrolled in the course will learn about potential career fields that they may wish to pursue in college.
MARKETING I FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Marketing I introduces students to basic marketing concepts that will increase their knowledge of the marketing mix: Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Students will learn about the domestic and global marketplace and how they affect employment as well as business opportunities. Students are encouraged to join DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), a co-curricular activity that teaches students about leadership while developing their business skills and building self-esteem. DECA students will have the opportunity of attending Regional, State and International career competitions with other high school DECA organizations, fundraising and performing community service work. Any student who plans on pursuing a career in business will enjoy this class. Students will also learn basic business knowledge that will help them in any career.
MARKETING II FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Marketing I
Grades: 11-12
Marketing II will increase student knowledge of the basic marketing concepts learned in Marketing I while introducing them to the functions of selling, entrepreneurship and developing a business plan. Students are encouraged to participate in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) where the business skills learned in class can be used at various competitive events. Students planning on pursuing a career in business will find this class very useful. Students will increase awareness of how marketing is all around us.
CAREER EXPLORATION FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Grades: 9-12
School-to-Careers is designed for students to increase their self-understanding, become more familiar with successful job attitudes and skills, and enhance their knowledge concerning health and safety principles on the job. Students will also develop a personal career plan. Emphasis is placed on increasing self-awareness and self-discipline in the skills and behavior required to succeed in the workplace and in life. This course will provide a foundation for learning about communication skills, decision making, coping and social skills. Through class activities and participation, students will acquire a better understanding of themselves, how to relate to others and be productive workers.
WORD PROCESSING FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

To exist today without an introduction to the world of computers is impossible. Today more than any period in history, computers are a part of our lives. This course provides students with an introduction to the world of computers and how they have changed society, as we know it. Students will learn proper keyboarding technique, comprehensive word processing skills, and receive an introduction to spreadsheets, database development, presentation graphics and Web pages. Letter and resume writing, as well as research papers using the MLA format will be incorporated into the course. This course is the prerequisite to higher-level studies in computers.
TECHNICAL COMMUNICATIONS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Word Processing
Grades: 11-12
The focus of the course will be on higher-level word processing through Microsoft Word, efficiency of design and purpose of spreadsheets through Microsoft Excel, and effective presentation skills through Microsoft Power Point. Students will also focus on database development and implementation through Microsoft Access, expanding productivity through web-page development using Microsoft FrontPage, and exploring personal productivity and time management through the use of Microsoft Outlook. Projects include integration of all aspects of the Microsoft Office Package in order to solve problems creatively through the use of technology. This course parallels requirements to pass the Microsoft Office User Specialist Core Certification exams.
WEB DEVELOPMENT FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Grades: 9-12
This course will cover some of the foundations of how to create and design websites. Students will learn how to make personal and business web pages using Microsoft Office, FrontPage, Web Page Maker and Flash.
TELEVISION & FILM PROMOTION FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 10-12
This course will focus on the television and film industry in the scope of promotions. This course will analyze and develop television commercials, analyze television programs for promotions and product placement and analyze movie promotions and images.
FASHION: DESIGN, FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
MERCHANDISING & MARKETING

This course will focus on the Apparel, Accessories and Textile Trade, most often referred to as the Fashion Industry. This course will explore the business process of fashion, from image analysis and consumer research, to design and showcasing. Students will examine the roles of fashion and image careers, as well as an in-depth study of the fields of fashion marketing and distribution. Students will utilize class content of promotion and event planning to help organize and run a DECA fashion show. |

ENGLISH I FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Grades: 9
English I encompasses the fundamentals of grammar, usage and mechanics as well as literature, writing skills, vocabulary and research skills. The course effectively relates theory to usage through instruction, practice, review and testing. The writing program is presented as a process with a planned progression for the attainment of specific skills. Provisions are made for revision related to the appropriateness of language, clarity, forcefulness and vitality of expression. The literary selections develop in students an awareness of the contents of literature as well as sensitivity to literary values. The relationship of literary values to human development is stressed.
ENGLISH I HONORS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Honors English I incorporate the objectives of English I and expands on its contents and materials. The course offers varied opportunities for students to develop critical reading/thinking skills and increased writing proficiency through various language arts experiences. Literary selections are varied and include short stories, poetry, novels, essays and dramas (Greek, Shakespearean and modern). Writing is taught not only as a way to present a finished composition, but also as an exploration of style and form. In addition, students will be introduced to advanced print and electronic library resource materials and instructed in research skills.

English II encompasses the fundamentals of grammar, usage and mechanics, as well as literature, writing skills, vocabulary and research skills. In addition, it places greater emphasis on the development of literary appreciation as it specifically relates to American authors. Included in this appreciation is an awareness of other aspects of American life – economic, social, political, religious and philosophical. Such emphasis correlates the development of American literature to the development of the nation as a whole. Students will relate the literary experiences presented to their own lives, thus building their concepts as members of society. In addition, students using available technology will continue to develop research skills through various research projects.
ENGLISH II HONORS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Honors English II incorporates the objectives of English II and expands its content and materials. Since it is intended primarily for students of high ability whose plans may include further education at the college level, the course includes several objectives, content and materials that will prepare students for an academically demanding program. Specifically, English II (Honors) emcompasses the fundamental principles of grammar, usage and mechanics. In addition, students are guided in a structured study of American literature: its forms, terminology, unity and intentions. The vocabulary program seeks to go beyond increased “recognition” vocabulary; use of new words in speech and writing will be emphasized. Students, using available technology, will continue to develop research skills through various research projects and papers.
ENGLISH III FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

English III encompasses the objectives of earlier grades with regard to the fundamentals of usage, mechanics, vocabulary, and writing skills. In addition, the course seeks to develop, through reading analysis, an understanding of the epic, ballad, lyric and sonnet as they relate to British literature, as well as the continued study of other forms of literature. Finally, the course stresses the development of research skills.
ENGLISH III HONORS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: English II and Teacher Recommendation
Grades: 11
Honors English III incorporates the objectives of English III and expands on its content and materials. It encompasses the objectives of earlier grades with regard to usage and mechanics. Greater emphasis is placed on the development of vocabulary and writing skills. In addition, the course seeks to develop, through reading and analysis, an understanding of the epic, ballad, lyric and sonnet as they relate to British literature. Furthermore, the course stresses the development of research skills. Completion of a research paper is a requirement of the course.
ENGLISH AP FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

AP English III incorporates the objectives of English III Honors and expands on its content, materials and techniques to help students acquire skills needed for the AP classroom. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking skills as well as on the techniques and content-specific strategies that can be used to prepare students for success in AP course work. Students will develop strategies to become more skilled in the literary analysis that precedes the writing of analytical compositions, timed and untimed. Specifically, they will develop strategies that enable them to ask and generate questions, engage actively with the text, and analyze and document their own thinking while reading. They will use these strategies to analyze passages, prose or poetry, by focusing on speaker, situation, key sentences, shifts and syntax. They will review previous AP exams and the exam scoring process. In addition, students will familiarize themselves with the electronic media available to support their studies.
ENGLISH IV FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS

Grades: 12
English IV encompasses the objectives of earlier grades with regard to the fundamentals of usage and mechanics and the development of vocabulary. Attention is given to sharpening various writing skills, including critical essays, five-paragraph essays and the research paper. In addition, the course seeks to develop, through reading analysis, an understanding of genre, ancient mythology and the variety of Eastern and Western religious traditions as they relate to World Literature.
ENGLISH IV HONORS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: English III and Teacher Recommendation
Grades: 12
Honors English IV encompasses the objectives of earlier grades with regard to usage, mechanics and the development of vocabulary. Attention is given to refining the skills required for writing endeavors involving essays, college applications and the research paper. In addition, the course seeks to develop students’ understanding of the power of selected fine literature of the world and to aid students in integrating this understanding with critical reading that stimulates critical response. Students are responsible for completing outside reading assignments independently and are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the materials read through discussion and writing. Unlike the “selections from great works” approach employed for English IV, the Honors syllabus offers an entire literary text from each of the different civilizations studied.
JOURNALISM I FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 10-12
Journalistic techniques are studied using the criteria needed to assemble a newspaper article. Students enrolled in this course help with the preparation of the school newspaper, The Klaxon.
HSPA LANGUAGE ARTS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 12
The HSPA course is designed for students who failed the HSPA. Throughout the year students will concentrate on the writing prompts and narrative and persuasive reading. The students work on their weaknesses in preparation for the HSPA retest and/or SRA process. Students concentrate on test taking strategies for multiple choice and open-ended questions and practice writing strategies for the picture prompt and the persuasive essay. |

ART I FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9-12
Art I is a general studio art course with an emphasis on the elements of art. It offers the student a basic experience in drawing, painting, color, sculpture and printmaking as well as an overview of ideas, processes and concepts. This course is predominantly production oriented. Students are introduced to the concepts of art history, aesthetics and critique as they relate to the studio projects.
ART II FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Art I
Grades: 10-12
This course will expand upon the processes covered in Art I with an emphasis on the principles of design and creativity. Students will be encouraged to explore in greater depth drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking with special considerations for the individuals’ areas of interest. Critique will be stressed as will art history as it applies to particular assignments.
ART III FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Art I & Art II
Grades: 11-12
This course includes a more intensive study of two and three-dimensional design as it applies to both fine art and commercial art. Students will explore a variety of mediums with concentrations in areas of individual interest. This course will have in-depth, long-term assignments that stress qualitative solutions to specific visual and technique problems. Portfolio development for future college art majors will be covered.
STUDIO ART/ART IV FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Art I, Art II and Art III or Independent Study
Grades: 12
The most advanced course which is offered. This course is designed for students intending to become Art majors in college or possibly pursuing art as a career. In-depth exploration of areas of art that are of particular interest to the student as well as exploration of others areas of possible interest. A continuing emphasis on portfolio development. Involvement in specific or prescribed curriculum and activities at the discretion of the instructor.
INDEPENDENT STUDY ART FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Art I and Art II
Grades: 11-12
This is a course for the dedicated art student and future art major who is capable of working independently while in a classroom environment. A variety of assignments will be given with a concentration of them having to do with areas that are of particular interest to that student. Portfolio development will be stressed. Involvement in specific or prescribed curriculum and activities, at the discretion of the instructor.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
ART I

Graphic Arts I is an introductory class to the world of Graphic Design. Students will learn to harmonize all elements of design into each and every project. Projects are based on a ladder of learning. Basic skills will be learned and built upon to ensure students reach the goals and explications of the class. Programs introduced are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Image Ready and Adobe Illustrator.
DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
& WEB ANIMATION
Prerequisite: Graphic Communication Arts
Grades: 10-12
This program works with formal design principles in order to produce 2D objects and images. This course will be based on creation of images from scratch. Students will learn vector-based image creation on Adobe Illustrator during the first half of the year. A gradual move towards (Adobe) Macromedia Flash web animation will occur and the student will create his or her own web-based animations.
GRAPHIC DESIGN: FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
PACKAGING & COMPLEX DESIGNS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 10-12
This program will help students to learn to create a design concept and see its impact on the final product. We will continue to define the hierarchy of information through the ordering of elements into a comprehensive visual unity. Students will work with Adobe InDesign, Adobe GoLive, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator in an effort to create complex design solutions.
BAND FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Knowledge of the rudiments of music and/or a background in instrumental music and/or demonstration of comparable proficiencies. Teacher recommendation is required
Grades: 7-12
Band meets on period a day five days a week. This course is designed for the study and performance of various styles of music for wind and percussion instruments. Students who join the Band are required to attend and participate in all after school practices and performances, i.e. football games, competitions, concerts, graduation, etc. to receive credit. Opportunities are available for students to audition for various other ensembles, which meet outside class such as Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, Flute Ensemble and any other Chamber Group that maintains enough student interest. Aside from rehearsals and performances, students improve their individual musicianship through the study of their instruments in a weekly small group lesson pullout program.
CHOIR FULL YEAR 2.5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: None
Grades: 9-12
This course is designed to teach the following: Develop an awareness of the aesthetic value of the musical blend, balance, style and phrasing of the individual voice in its relation to the entire group. Develop an understanding of appropriate audience behavior. Choir is scheduled during the lunch period. Students attend lunch for ½ of the period and Choir for the remaining ½ period.

This course is designed to help develop each student musically through a complete understanding of the rules and principles involved in music composition. The student will also increase the ability to analyze aurally and visually musical sounds and symbols, as well as improving his/her music reading and performance. The student will also be able to develop his/her skills in arranging, harmonizing and improvising music.
MUSIC THEORY II FULL YEAR 5 CREDITS
Prerequisite: Music Theory I
Grades: 9-12
This course is designed to expand the students’ knowledge of what was learned in Music Theory I as well as opening up new musical territories for each student. The student will increase his/her knowledge of chord structure by expanding past the basic triads into seventh, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords. The student will also acquire an understanding of instrumental music through the field of orchestration. This course will also help each student prepare for a music career upon graduation from high school.

Guidance Department The Guidance
Department’s services were established to help make students’ stay
in high school as beneficial and purposeful as possible. The
department aids each student in the choice of curriculum and the
selection of subject courses within the curriculum. At appropriate
intervals, the department also advises each student, along with his/
her parents, on the choice of a vocation, entry into college, job
placement and personal problems which the student may face.
Counselors keep a careful check on every student’s progress by
means of frequent student interviews, analysis of test results,
inspection of report cards, feedback from teachers and interviews
with the student’s parents.
The
Scheduling Process
This course guide is prepared to
assist students and their counselors in the scheduling process for
the school year 2007/2008. At the time of this printing there are
several proposed courses, which are subject to final approval by
the Board of Education. Students will begin the scheduling process
in January and continue through March. Data from student course
requests will be used to determine appropriate staffing allocations
to support the curricula program in this Course Guide. Students
and parents with questions should direct them to the respective
Guidance Counselors listed above. Students with special needs
should also consult their respective Case Managers as regards their
upcoming schedule of classes.

When preparing to enter college, having a well-organized schedule of how you will spend your time will make all the difference. You're never too young to start; you will find something valuable here if you are a senior trying to pick a college or a freshman in high school just starting to develop your own interests.
September:
- Freshmen: Visit your Guidance counselor to map out a four-year curriculum that will put you into the most challenging courses you can handle.
- Sophomores: Register for the PSAT or the PLAN if they are offered to sophomores at your school.
- Juniors: Get serious about your schoolwork if you haven't already; junior-year grades are extremely important as is the rigor of your coursework. Be sure to register for the PSAT or the PLAN. Attend college fairs and gather information.
- Seniors: Plan to work really hard this term. Your grades will be included on your transcript. If necessary, register to retake the SAT I or ACT. If SAT IIs are required by your colleges, sign up for those, too. Review your final list of colleges with your counselor, and start gathering applications. Once you've received the application forms, begin working on the essays. Thinking about applying early? You need to decide soon.
